Placement of Metatags

Post by angelacobb on Thu Nov 04, 2010 11:01 pm

A ranking or search order does take place with Google
and Yahoo and it begins with the "Title" metag which
should consist of no more than 65 characters separated
by commas. The "Title" should describe in generic
terms, the goods and services, followed by a location
from which the resource is located, i.e., city, state.
The placement of a domain name which is not generic
within the "Title" is not appropriate, unless your
domain name is a major recognizable brand name.

The second metatag is the "Description" which is
usually 25-30 words to form a complete sentence which
best describes one's goods and services.

And the very last category - "Keywords" are also
somewhat limited to 15-16 words which can be plural
and compound in nature. Again, avoid multiple entries
which could be mistaken as "spamdexed entries" which
is defined as the loading, and submission of
repetitive words into a particular metatag category.
"Spamdexing" when discovered on a webpage and reported
to Google's spamreport.com can result in the
elimination of your website from their search
directory.

Good luck!

Meta tags are important but for varying reasons.

The Keywords meta tag is useless now. It used to be used to tell search engines what keywords your site was targeting, but it was ruined by spammers, and search engines have found far more reliable ways of determining a site's value.

The most important meta tag is the Title meta tag. Not only is this an important meta tag, but it's actually one of the most important on-site SEO factors that rank a site. I would concentrate on making each page of your site have it's own accurate, and descriptive Title tag. Generally a good Title tag looks like this:

Where the actual name of the site comes after a list of keywords or the title of the specific page.

The last meta tag that is truly valuable is the Description meta tag. The Description controls the text a search engine displays underneath your page's search result. It does not actually affect the SEO of the site (i.e. does not help or hurt a page's rankings), but it can sometimes improve the click through rate from the search engines. If you have an engaging, compelling Description tag, people will be swayed to click your result over other results that display random excerpts from a page's content.

HI

Meta Tags are used only to show visitors in SERP what site is all about.
Otherwise it has No use.
Sometimes it helps in Optimizing, depends on the algorithm.
Meta Description are written in Head Tag of every page.
Meta Description has a limit of 160 characters and Meta Keywords has about 70 characters.

Thanks
Udit
